"Cyber Everything" Film Screening & Discussion

On May 10, 2023, 3-4.45 pm (Japan Standard Time), the documentary film "Cyber Everything" by Shimon Dotan (future Mercator Visiting Professor for AI in the Human Context at CST) will be screened at Scramble Hall, Shibuya QWS. The screening will be followed by a round table discussion from 5-6.30 pm. The event will be held in English.

“Cyber Everything” explores the impact of the Cyber domain on modern human condition, that has been transformed by cutting-edge developments in technology. Cyber is not just a tool, product or technology, but an unseen organizing principle that has reconfigured power structures and human interaction around the world. The film examines the implications of Cyber on war, peace, and the future of humanity. The film features interviews with AI and internet pioneers, philosophers, artists, and users, who shape and are shaped by this new domain.

Participating in the panel discussion:

• Markus Gabriel, Professor of Epistemology, Modern and Contemporary Philosophy at the University of Bonn, Academic Director of The New Institute, Director of the Center for Science and Thought, and Chairman of the International Centre for Philosophy NRW.
• Katsuhiko Hibino Professor at Tokyo University of the Arts, director of the Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto and the Gifu Prefectural Museum of Art as well as the chairman of the Social Contribution Committee of the Japan Football Association. 
• Teruo Fujii, Professor at the Institute of Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Tokyo and Director of the Institute since 2015. He is a member of the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation. His fields of research are applied microfluidic systems and underwater engineering.
• Takahiro Nakajima, Professor at the University of Tokyo, Director of the Institute of Oriental Culture, and Academic Advisor to the Institute of East Asian Art and Culture. His research focuses on Chinese and World philosophy.

The film is written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Shimon Dotan, in cooperation with his creative partner Netaya Anbar. Both teach at the New York University Graduate School of Journalism. Together they founded Cinequest Films in Montreal, Canada, where they produced and edited several feature films. Their work has been screened in New York FF, Berlin, Chicago, Sundance and Montreal winning awards at prestigious festivals including NYFF, Berlin, Chicago and many more.

The event is convened and organized in cooperation with the East Asian Academy for New Liberal Arts at the University of Tokyo as well as the SHIBUYA QWS Centre and it is part of the Future Society Initiative Symposium Series.
